OUR SCHOOL

On August 28th 2007, the Joseph-Carlebach-School in Hamburg has been re-established.

The school’s name goes back to the chief rabbi Dr. Joseph Carlebach (1883-1942). For more than five years he has lead the school and formed it through his principles of education. He was a very spontaneous and loving teacher who helped pupils not only to enjoy learning but also to work and detect independently.

We have the goal to follow Joseph Carlebach’s tradition and to create a place at this school which combines modern teaching and Jewish religious education.

Are you looking for a demanding preschool or a primary school which is suitable for children?

We offer a large program for preschool as well as for primary school children up to class 6:

•All-day school from 8.00 o’clock to 15.45 o’clock

•Three meals which are kosher

•Inter-year lessons

•Learning individually and socially in small groups (max. 18 pupils)

•Rhythmic lessons in all subjects

•Jewish religious education and Hebrew

•English lessons starts in preschool

•Modern equipment

•The possibility to attend courses such as music, theatre, nature, Russian, French as well as computer, new media and many, many more

•School-bus shuttle for children who have a long way to school

WHO WE ARE

The educational team of the Joseph-Carlebach-School consist of skilled teachers and certified social pedagogues. While the work of the preschool is organised through our certified social pedagogues, the primary school children are taught by qualified primary school teachers in subjects such as Math and German. Hebrew and Jewish religion are taught by the rabbi and specialized teachers.

HOW WE WORK

Our school is based on the tradition of the Talmud-Tora-School which combines the principles of education with Jewish tradition. We are open-minded and promote the thought of everyone being equal.

Furthermore, our work is based on the newest educational knowledge, so that we established inter-year lessons in our primary school. The children in preschool are offered exercises which are suitable for their knowledge and ability. We do not want to make too few or too many demands on the pupils, therefore we prepare exercises

which suite every child individually.

In order to ensure the quality of our teaching, teachers take part regularly on courses for further education, sitting in on lectures, evaluations, or supervisions. In addition, our pupils take tests that are comparable to those of states schools.

Not only have pupils the possibility to learn the “normal” subject, but they can also get involved with different courses. For example, pupils who are talented in music can participate in our music or theatre course. Pupils can also learn something about nature and technology, computer an new media or learn languages such as French, English or Russian.

But our school has more to offer: not only do we have small classes which all have a computer and modern learning material. We also have excellent kosher food and a bus-shuttle service for children who have a long way to school.

SCHOOL IS COMMON TASK

“We need a whole village to educate a child”

This African saying is always in our minds as school by itself cannot form the individual personality of a child. Therefore, it is very important that parents work with us, and many of them already do so, as for example in coordinating different school projects.

SCHOOL FINANCES

The school is financed by the Jewish community of Hamburg. Furthermore, parents have to pay a monthly tuition fee of 250,- Euro per child.*

(*The tuition fee varies in respect to the income of parents. If siblings are already at the school, the tuition fee decreases. In addition, money for food and maybe for transport services arises.)
